How much heat do you need for an electric fireplace?

The size of an electric fireplace has no bearing on its heat output. Every size in each series has the same heater. Electric fireplaces typically have two heat output levels: 5000 BTUs and 8000 BTUs. Most fireplaces are 5000 BTU and operate on 120 volt current with a maximum output of 1500 watts. This equates to 5000 BTUs of heat, or enough to heat a 400-500 square foot area. Some electric fireplaces with a maximum output of 2500 watts can also be connected to 240 volts. This equates to 8000 - 8500 BTUs of heat, which is sufficient for an area of up to 1000 square feet.
An electric fireplace is a great way to add warmth to a room. A blower pushes heat out the front of the unit, and no heat is lost to venting or a chimney. They are not, however, intended to be the only source of heat in a room. They are ideal for zone heating, removing the chill from a room. For example, if a room in the house is a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house, you can use an electric fireplace to warm it up instead of turning up the furnace in the entire house. With zone heating, you can keep your HVAC system at an energy-efficient setting while also keeping the area you're using at a comfortable temperature.
